How do I choose the right propeller pitch for my motor?

Choosing the right propeller pitch for your outboard motor is crucial for achieving optimal performance, fuel efficiency, and maneuverability.

Pitch represents the distance the propeller would travel in one revolution in the water, and it must be adapted to the engine’s power as well as the intended use (cruising, high-speed navigation, or towing). In general, a shorter pitch (e.g., 8–9) offers better acceleration and greater thrust at higher engine RPMs at low speeds. Conversely, a longer pitch (e.g., 10–12) increases top speed and reduces fuel consumption at cruising RPMs, making it suitable for long-distance cruising.

To narrow down the choice, you must consider the total weight on board, the hull type (planing or displacement), and local conditions (wind, current). A practical test involves comparing the engine RPM indicated on the tachometer at full throttle: it should remain within the range recommended by the manufacturer (often between 5,500 and 6,000 RPM). If the RPM significantly exceeds this range, a larger pitch should be chosen; if the RPM remains too low and the boat struggles to get up on plane, a smaller pitch will be more suitable.
