Understanding the lubrication requirements of 4-stroke marine engines
The lubrication requirements for two-stroke and four-stroke engines are very different, due to the way each engine operates. Four-stroke boat engines are lubricated by oil that is repeatedly pumped into a crankcase, similar to a car or truck.
Four-stroke marine engines are also designed to be consumer-friendly and environmentally friendly, with reduced emissions and extended service life. However, this technology places demanding requirements on engine lubricants.
Use a 4-stroke engine oil specifically designed for marine engines
Marine oils and automotive oils are not interchangeable. Although the engine oil in a four-stroke marine engine performs similar functions to that in a car engine, automotive oil should never be used in a boat engine.
Two major factors explain this incompatibility: water and wear.
Marine engines operate in a humid, sometimes salty environment where the risk of corrosion is high. Marine engine oils are specifically formulated to provide enhanced protection against rust and oxidation, even in the presence of condensation or moisture. They therefore require oils that are specially designed to withstand moisture, corrosion, and prolonged operation.
Which marine oil should you choose for a 4-stroke engine?
To ensure optimal protection, it is strongly recommended to use a 4-stroke marine engine oil that complies with the manufacturer's recommendations. NMMA FC-W certified oils are specially developed to meet the demands of four-stroke marine engines, ensuring reliable and long-lasting performance.
Common viscosities:
- 10W30, 10W40: standard use, wide temperature range
- 25W40, 25W50: powerful engines, high performance, hot climates, intensive use
How often should you change 4-stroke engine oil?
It is recommended to change the oil:
- every 100 hours of operation
- or at least once per season
Regular oil changes maintain performance, limit wear and tear, and extend the life of the engine. Each time you change the oil, it is also essential to replace the oil filter at the same time.
