Frequent maintenance of your boat's engine is essential. Poor maintenance can lead to complications such as leaks, breakdowns and excessive fuel consumption, all of which affect your safety on board.
Salt deposits, sea water and sunlight prematurely damage your boat and engine over time. To prolong its life, your engine needs frequent maintenance with quality products.

How do you maintain your boat's engine?

There are two types of maintenance your engine needs to run properly for a long time: daily and annual. Wintering at the end of the season also requires special care to prevent damage caused by your boat's inactivity.

Daily (or routine) maintenance

Routine maintenance is a quick job to be carried out after every sea or freshwater outing. It helps prevent salt and dirt build-up in the motor. This maintenance involves rinsing with fresh water, and a visual check to ensure that no damage has occurred.
To maintain your motor after each outing, you can :
  • Rinse the entire motor with fresh water
  • Use a rinse kit, or run the motor for a few minutes in fresh water
  • Check the water in the water pump (it should not be hot)
  • Disconnect the fuel supply and run the engine to burn off any remaining fuel in the carburetor
  • Check for water and fuel leaks
  • Check oil level
  • Lubricate the engine
To simplify the task, an outboard motor maintenance kit is ideal.

Annual maintenance

Annual maintenance is often carried out by a professional, but this can be a costly solution. Doing your own boat maintenance is perfectly feasible, and not as complicated as you might think.
As a minimum, the annual maintenance schedule should include
  • changing filters
  • anode replacement
  • change spark plugs
  • engine oil change
  • oil change
  • turbine change
  • change engine anode
  • belt check
Make sure you always have the right maintenance kit for your engine: Mercury Mariner, Yamaha, Suzuki, Johnson Evinrude, Honda maintenance kits...

Winterizing your boat

Winterizing allows you to check the condition of your boat and carry out the maintenance necessary for its safety and longevity.
When winterizing your boat, you can carry out the same maintenance as after every outing. Just remember to check the spark plugs and put some oil in the cylinders. Charge and clean the batteries, check the condition of the filters and drain the baseplate.
Winterizing your boat involves a number of steps to help your engine withstand the rigors of winter.
  • Drain seawater from the system
  • Dismantle the water inlet
  • Rinse the circuit with fresh water
  • Remove salt (with anti-salt)
  • Fill circuit with antifreeze
  • Rinse water inlet
  • Check water flow
  • Loosen belt
Proper maintenance of your boat's engine throughout all seasons helps prevent damage and technical problems that can be dangerous and costly.
