Choosing the right propeller pitch for your outboard motor is crucial for achieving optimal performance, fuel efficiency, and maneuverability.

Pitch refers to the distance the propeller travels in one revolution through the water, and it must be matched to the engine’s power as well as the intended use (cruising, high-speed boating, or towing). In general, a shorter pitch (e.g., 10–12) provides better acceleration and greater thrust at higher engine RPMs at low speeds. Conversely, a longer pitch (e.g., 13–15) increases top speed and reduces fuel consumption at cruising RPMs, making it suitable for long voyages.

To narrow down your choice, you should consider the total weight on board, the hull type (planing or displacement), and local conditions (wind, current). A practical test involves comparing the engine RPM shown on the tachometer at full throttle: it should remain within the range recommended by the manufacturer (often between 5,500 and 6,000 RPM).
